Phosphatidylcholine, what it is and how it works

What is phosphatidylcholine?

Phosphatidylcholine is a particular type of phospholipid (lipids that contain phosphate) that contains choline (precursor of acetylcholine). It is one of the most important components of biological membranes and regulates the permeability and integrity. It was discovered by Maurice Gobley in 1850, particularly present in soy lecithin, liver and egg yolk.

The phosphatidylcholine thanks to its chemical properties is able to solubilize the fats with which it comes in contact reducing the dimensions of the cells that contain them (the adipocytes); for this reason it is used in the aesthetic field in the treatment of reduction of localized adiposity, orange peel skin and cellulite.

The most widely used technique for the administration of phosphatidylcholine (and other substances capable of improving microcirculation) in the aesthetic field is called Lipodissolve.

Phosphatidylcholine and lipodissolve

What is it and what are the advantages of the lipodissolve technique based on phosphatidylcholine?

The technique called Lipodissolve consists in the injection by thin needles of sterile preparations based on phosphatidylcholine directly into the adipose tissue to be treated.

Allows the reduction of localized fat and cellulite on the abdomen, coulotte de cheval, inner thighs, arms and knees.

Unlike liposuction, it is not a surgical procedure, it takes place on an outpatient basis, does not cause significant side effects and is certainly less expensive for the patient (from 150 to 200 euros per session)

The results in terms of reduction of the volume of adipocytes, improvement of the microcirculation with consequent reduction of localized fat mass, are appreciable in about 2-3 sessions (which distance themselves on average 14 days from each other); the total number of sessions required varies from 4 to 8.

Following a balanced diet and exercise regime, the results obtainable with this treatment are definitive.

Phosphatidylcholine side effects, what are the disadvantages of the injection of phosphatidylcholine?

FEW. The pain caused by the procedure is absolutely tolerable and the burning due to infiltration can be easily relieved by adding anesthetics to the preparation.

In the days following the injection of phosphatidylcholine the following sensations are common: burning, inflammation and slight effusions (which disappear within a few days).

Contraindications

Injection of phosphatidylcholine is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • Hepatic insufficiency and renal failure
  • In pregnancy and lactation
  • Known allergy to Soy or phosphatidylcholine
  • Patients with coagulation disorders
